Do you want to eat my rice?
This project starts off with exploring on the idea of living lifestyle in Indonesia. Using Rice as the entry point to gain the basic understanding of the locals living which in term linked to the Economy and Agricultural development in Indonesia. Agriculture in Indonesia started as a means to grow and provide food. Hence, rice has been a staple food for Indonesians for a millenia and it hold a central place in both the Indonesian culture and cuisine.
This work is an experimentational piece that explores with different industrial materials to create organic products. The recreation of the ‘object’ is to reflect on the processes and stages that the farmers went through in harvesting their final product. We use industrial materials as a replacement of the organic materials (rice) to recreate different rice products that we have seen and bought from Yogyakarta.
Through this process of recreation, we try to portray the contrast between the lifestyle in Indonesia and in Singapore. Farmers in Indonesia work in an repetitive cycle, where they plant and harvest their own crops in order to live a sustainable life.. They plant and that’s what they get in return. But in a modern city, are we just working for a stable living? what are the real reason behind? What are we really working for in the end of the day?
